On Saturday I attended a Modern Calligraphy Class held by the very talented Joyce Lee of Artsynibs. Calligraphy is something that I've wanted to get into for a very long time. I've been doing faux calligraphy on my Macbook but I could never master the art of those thick and think lines on paper. I thought learning calligraphy would be easy enough as I knew a little bit about it through my graphic work, but boy was I wrong.
If you think calligraphy is just 'fancy handwriting' then you my friend are very wrong. We were taught how to write again, all from the start, from the way we hold a pen/pencil to the position of our paper and the posture of our backs.

The lesson starts with Joyce explaining the different tools that we would be using - all of which are included in the price of the lesson and are able to be taken home. We then warm up using a pencil learning how to hold and move as we do so. Joyce was coming round to each of us individually to offer her words of wisdom which were very comforting. We then moved onto warming up with a nib and ink. This was very daunting and nothing at all like using a foundation pen like I was expecting. Again Joyce came round to everyone to reassure us.
We then moved onto the different strokes and the pressure that should be applied to create those thick and thin lines, then moved onto the alphabet and different phrases.
As it is nearing Christmas, Joyce had put on a little bit of a Christmas spin to the class which was a really nice touch. We got to make our own Christmas cards at the end using the skills that we had learnt throughout the lesson.

The classes aren't rushed, and although they're only 3 hours long I felt like I walked away with so much knowledge. In this technological age it was nice to sit and write with ink and paper again.

Each class is priced at £49 and includes a specially curated starter kit which includes a holder, nibs, ink, personalised notebook, lesson sheets and more. Drinks and refreshments are also included. Joyce also runs a Brush Lettering class too (which I really want to attend after the new year).
More information on the classes can be found here.

Have you ever tried calligraphy?

Some of these photos were taken by the very talented Andy who can be found here and his instagram here. He does loads of collaborations so do check him out!
